The Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College Alumni Association got registration on 22nd day of April 2010 from Registrar of Societies West Bengal Act XXVI of 1961 vide No:-S/L/70053 of 2010-11. Alumni Association functions from College Administrative Building.
SYSTEM DRIVEN MECHANISM
Since inception at JGEC Campus, Alumni Association is continuously trying to provide value based organised alumni activities at campus. Also, it is dedicatedly working to enhance JGEC Brand through regular activities. Today scientists, industry leaders, top professors, HoDs and directors of different IITs come to campus at least twice a year, which we never thought off earlier. Alumni Association organises regular workshops for students, creative programs for Centre for Innovation and scholarship programs. Alumni Association has channelized alumni effort into systematic approach. Of course, miles to go.
BRIDGING THE GAP
Students are backbone behind formation of Alumni Association. Despite various tough situation, alumni association has become successful at campus only because of students of JGEC. Previously, there was no organized alumni effort to provide exposure to students and promote brand JGEC. After formation of alumni association at our beloved JGEC campus, Bridging the Gap initiative started on a regular and routine basis.
KANCHENJUNGA
During regular activities, AA has assessed situations inside campus. Student’s orientation, professor’s feedback, market scenario etc have been assessed and it was decided that there should be a sustainable effort which can provide global exposure to students and promote brand JGEC.
Despite of our 60 years history, unfortunately we are not as strong brand as we supposed to be. Assessing the situation and how much alumni association can implement in reality effectively (so that our contribution should not be wasted), Alumni Association (AA) has decided to go for a self-sustainable model, Kanchenjunga (a G+2 knowledge centre and convention centre). SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM ACTIVITIES
The sponsors provide the scholarship by using the Alumni Association platform. Every year, Alumni Association organizes scholarship orientation program. Alumni Association website provides the scholarship opportunities to JGEC students where students apply for the scholarship online. Alumni Association organizes the scholarship program and interview/ sorting mechanism in consultation with the sponsors. Number of students are selected based on their documented financial and academic records. Face-to-face interview session also arranged to provide career developmental experience to the students. Also, career development guidance provided to the students during scholarship orientation program. In 2020 & 2021, online interview sessions were organized during COVID-19 pandemic time. Sponsors provide the scholarship amount to the students either through Alumni Association or direct payment to the deserving students.
First sentence To be corrected as -- Scholarship Program is getting organised in Campus via face toface interview since 2013 in a proper documented manner. To encourage innovative ideas, Alumni Association organized Innovation Challenge inside JGEC campus, every year two times, along with Centre for Innovation. Most importantly students connect themselves with alumni activities. All these possible due to thrust for quality which is encouraged by all the ex-students of JGEC.
INDUSTRY ACADEMIA INTERACTION
For last ten years, the Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College Alumni Association (having HQ inside JGEC campus) has continually working towards achieving excellence, with dedicated set of engineers, through Bridging the Gap events.
In these nine years, two directors of IIT visited campus to attend seminar organised by alumni association (Dr. C V R Murthy and Dr. Gautam Biswas). President of Indo American Chamber of Commerce visited campus in addition to academicians/ industry persons and successful ex-students (such as Dr. Promode Bandyopadhyay - ASME Award Winner Scientist from Naval Undersea Warfare Centre USA, Professor Ashok Kumar Moulik and so on).
CONCEPT TO COMMISSIONING
Before taking decision for Kanchenjunga (state of the art Convention Centre), AA had various options to do something for JGEC in an organized way. But AA had decided a path which can make some positive impact to campus and society as a whole. Concept notes, SWOT analysis were few approaches which had been adopted during feasibility study. Alumni Association's objective is to incorporate values to the system by providing positive inputs to our students to face larger life and at the same time building Brand JGEC which can highlight JGEC’s contribution towards Industry & society. Long run consideration (with the bigger interest to serve our Alma Mater and thus serve society via a systematic structured platform with a social commitment to add value to our Alma Mater) and planning is embedded in this Project (commonly known as PK Project Kanchenjunga) and it is built on commitment.

Earlier, alumni and their alma-mater were treated as discrete entities wherein one’s existence was independent of the other.
Local alumni chapters at different locations away from the institute used to form as a means to interact with other fellow alumni. However, these associations seldom had any interaction with the institution. That's the reasons institutions globally are focusing for centralised campus-based Alumni platform.
With the advent of Social Media and digital technology, alumni relationship has taken a different flavour altogether. Centralised alumni platform of institutions have started to harness the power of alumni through various networking platforms and focusing on connecting ex-students with campus.

There are various ways in which alumni association is creating a powerful impact to campus because alumnus are most loyal ambassador of the campus.
Support system
An engaged alumni network allows the University to benefit from the skills and experience of our graduates, by offering their support to our students, to the institution and to each other. If we keep them well informed and engaged, alumni are our most loyal supporters and our best ambassadors, offering invaluable marketing and promotion across their personal and professional networks.
Offering expertise
Talented alumni will likely have a treasure of experience and skills to share with current students via talks and meets. In certain cases, this could go even further with alumni offering to practically support students in work placements and help them launch their careers. JGEC Alumni Association has created an engaged alumni network which is beneficial because engaged graduates are much more likely to want to “give back” to the beloved alma mater. During COVID pandemic, JGEC Alumni Association successfully introduced webinar platform where alumni across the globe got an opportunity to interact with the student in real-time.
Mentorship
Alumni can play an active role in voluntary programs like mentoring students in their areas of expertise. JGEC Alumni Association has created a structured platform where students got opportunity, through Bridging the Gap initiative, to interact with successful alumnus, professionals, academicians and scientists at JGEC campus. Also through Innovation Challenge, students can nurture and showcase their talents on a regular intervals.
Scholarship
Alumnus also play a significant role in contributing scholarships to deserving students. Alumni get in touch with students and share their expertise and best practices in a given field.
Assistance in Employability
Alumni Association's function is not to create job. But Alumni Association helps to connect alumnus with campus and create alumni network. Alumni network has a real-life benefit for current students. Alumni also donate their valuable time to offer career support to current students. This enhances the students’ experience and give them that competitive edge in today’s tough job market.
For JGEC Alumni Association, focus is beloved JGEC Campus and close interaction with students. Alumni Connect is one of the biggest strengths for JGEC and Alumni Association is committed to enhance the Brand JGEC.
